Patios 101 Pt. 3

Patios 101

This will be the last post in our series about patios. This will be all about:

Accessories

Patios are not built in a vacuum. They are part a larger environment that all serves the homeowner. Part of the fun of creating a great patio space is the incorporation of some other components. There are plenty of options, but here are some choices that you may want to consider:

Pergola

Many times we can’t choose which side of the house the patio is on. This can mean the patio is either too shady or too sunny during part of the day. One way to prevent this is to add a pergola over part of the space. This structure can make a space feel more intimate, or shade the space from the harsh sun.

Bench seats

There are plenty of options for outdoor furniture, but nothing feels or looks quite like built in bench seats. These can be built of stone, concrete, or even wood. They can have backs, or not. Many times they serve as a border to the space and help to define the patio visually.

Heating and Lighting

Outdoor spaces in this area are limited by the weater, but installing heating elements can help to extend the length of usable time that this space will be comfortable. Lighting is one of the most underappreciated elements in any outdoor spaces. Some pre-planning can keep lighting more affordable, and easily makes a good space into a great space. It can be used to accent landscape features, light the patio for conversation, or help light the path.

Landscaping

Surprisingly, many times landscaping is neglected on patio projects, but has a big impact. It doesn’t have to be extravagant, but some well placed plantings and groundcover can really enhance a patio and make a space sit comfortably in the terrain.

Fire and Water

Water features, hot tubs, and ponds are great choices to strike a certain tone for the space. Fire can end up being the centralizing feature in a patio. Either a chimenea, fire place or fire pit.

Kitchens

Outdoor kitchens have been steadily growing in popularity, and for good reason. Outdoor experiences frequently center around eating and drinking. Having a space that can help with the preparation of that food and drink can be a great benefit. Cabinets, countertops, grills and other appliances are all designed for long term outdoor use, even in our harsh climate.
